Supporting safer and dignified trading spaces in Bulawayo
Switzerland is supporting efforts to improve livelihoods of informal traders in Bulawayo through a $200,000 contribution towards Safe Markets.
During a recent visit to the market site, Ambassador Stéphane Rey joined Bulawayo Mayor and Senator David Coltart, Mr. Simon Saunyama, representing the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Hon. Judith Ncube, city councillors and development partners to assess progress on the initiative and engage with stakeholders.
The Swiss-funded project aims to create a safer, more resilient and more inclusive trading environment for informal traders, who form a vital part of Zimbabwe’s urban economy. The planned upgrades include improved market infrastructure, enhanced lighting, better sanitation facilities, reliable water supply and more accessible trading spaces, with particular attention to the needs of women and other vulnerable groups.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Rey emphasized that the project is about much more than infrastructure.
“Development is about people, dignity and resilience. Informal traders are not operating at the margins of society; they are indispensable to Zimbabwe’s urban economic fabric. Their contribution to food security, employment and economic circulation deserves recognition, support and respect,” he said.
The informal sector plays a critical role in Bulawayo’s economy, supporting thousands of traders and their families. By investing in safer and more organized trading spaces, Switzerland is contributing to improved working conditions, greater economic opportunities and enhanced urban resilience.
The Highlanders Safe Market initiative forms part of broader efforts by the City of Bulawayo and its partners to create dignified trading spaces that protect livelihoods while promoting sustainable urban development. The project will replace temporary structures with more durable facilities designed to withstand the challenges faced by traders and improve the overall trading environment.
Mayor David Coltart welcomed Switzerland’s support, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving the lives of traders who often operate under difficult conditions. Women make up a significant proportion of Bulawayo’s informal traders, making investments in safe, accessible and gender-sensitive market infrastructure particularly important.
